Re: Substitute Rack for ROM?

2012-05-30 by steve_the_composer

Basically, yes. In terms of E-Mu hardware built around the P2K synth engine there's (1) the 4 x 4 set of 16 knobs which can rotate through Quick Edit, Program, Volume, and Pan modes (P2500/CS units) and (2) the set of 4 knobs which can rotate through MidiA/B/C/D, MidiE/F/G/H, and MidiI/J/K/L (single rack units). I have never seen a keyboard version, so I am not sure what cardware configuration those have.

Also, I thought the factory presets on ROMs also had patchcords based on either one or the other configurations. If I am right, a CMPSR ROM in a P2500 would only use MidiA --> MidiL and a P2500 ROM or a CS ROM in a single rack unit module will be unable to make use of patchcord functions that have MidiM --> MidiP.

I cannot test this by swapping ROMs (accessibility issue), so I am not sure that there isn't some kind of translation by the CS/P2500. Maybe someone can check to see this. (I'd take a peek at the Preset Patchcord assignments. On 12-controller based factory presets, I have found preset patchcords assigned to MidiK/L while on 16-controller based factory presets I have found them assigned to MidiN/O/P.

For example, I have an Advanced Orchestra ROM in a P2500 which has the preset patchcords assigned to MidiK for FxA Sends and MidiL for FxB Sends.

So I think its useful to know the controller configuration basis for the ROM presets.

Hope this helps.

Steve

This is one of several differences between the presets on the different versions of the ROM. So, the controller assignments for factory presets should be different depending on whther the ROM was designed for a 12-controller box or a 16-controller box.

These boxes use ROM IDs, Bank numbers, and Preset numbers to point to presets. The factory sequences (indeed all sequences) will have pointers to the ROMs and presets being used.

The ROMs I'm most interested in are hard to come by, but I see the rack versions they're based upon are plentiful and cheap. Could I connect, say, an Xtreme Lead-1 to my MP-7, as a "workaround"?
