Thanks for clarifying. It makes sense to be able to see "snapshots" of different measures. From what little I have seen of E-Mu's grid mode, I don't see any way you could do that. As for triggers, my early use of them (which I still do) is the use of notes (Controllers->Trigger Button Function:Play Note Events) to tigger arps or various sounds on the fly (real-time performance modality). I mention this because I think it might make a good entry point into learning about triggers. 1. Toggle the buttons so the triggers led is lit. 2. In the controllers menu system, set the trigger buttons function to Play Note Event. 3. Set up a few triggers (T1->T16) to play the notes of your choice on >>different<< midi channels with different presets.* Test latch mode while you are at it. *My P2500 is always set to multitimbral mode. It seems that this technique this will also work with different presets on different channels in omni mode, but in poly mode, the buttons will only trigger the preset on the basic channel [the one showing in the display]. Tip: The buttons and knobs have what I consider to be function overloading--they do different things depending on the various settings (states). On a simple level, the 16 knobs can be quickly rotated through four different sets of functions: Quick Edit, Program, Volume, and Pan. An additional layer of complexity involves programming the knobs (Ctrl, Ch, and destination) via the Controllers menu system. Similary, the 16 buttons can be quickly toggled between Track Enable/Mute and Triggers. Of course, the triggers do different things depending on the function selected (play notes, play beats, select patterns). BTW, you can switch these on the fly. For example, you can trigger some parts of a beats pattern to establish a basic pattern and then switch to Play Note Events. The tigger leds will display the current status for each mode. In terms of function overloading, complexity is added to the 16 buttons/leds when you enter Grid record mode. They do something completely different!!!!! Hope this helps with some of the basics of triggers. Steve --- In xl7@yahoogroups.com, "ackack1020" <sackley85@...> wrote: > > Thanks for the replies Steve! You're actually going way deeper than I meant to, but kudos! I don't know anything about Triggers... I want to learn, but don't know where to start, haha. I read the manual, but think I have to get my head around some other abilities of the CS first. > > I just want to be able to see the active steps (LEDs) for a bar at a time while the pattern is running. Not necessarily trying to get a more precise or complex sequence going, but just for the ability to "TR step sequence" (i.e. Grid Record Mode on the CS, right?) Bar 1 (for example) while the rest of the 8 bars (for example) play through. As it is the 16 buttons update each time a new bar starts. > > --- In xl7@yahoogroups.com, "steve_the_composer" <smw-mail@> wrote: > > > > >>>> Forget the set of questions I posted!!! <<<<<< > > > > I just tried grid mode record and it seems like whatever triggers I set up to play, based on the key value, were recorded and were played back when the pattern looped. > > > > Then I went into step mode. Nothing plays. This seems to make sense--I was in step mode. The play button advances the seqeuncer based on the step settings. > > > > Are you are trying to play previously recorded patterns while in step record mode? (Maybe that's what you are asking about.) Again, I never use either grid mode record or step mode record, but (based on my admittedly quick test) it looks like you cannot have the seqeuencer playing at a clocked speed and be in step record mode at the same time. > > > > Perhaps if you built a microprocessor (arduino, pic, etc.) with a push button to send midi clock events one at a time and you set the E-Mu sequencer to esternal clock, you might be able to step through a sequence one clock at a time and then enter new midi data exactly where you want it. > > > > Now that I did the test run, it sounds like that is the kind of sequencing ability you are looking for. > > > > Last summer I did some experiments generating midi data with an arduino. Perhaps I might get into more experiments this summer and might try this solution. Hmmmmm. You could probably write some code for a simple program to do it from a computer. [If "C" is pressed, send a clock byte to the midi port--or something like that.] > > > > Steve > > > > > > > > > > > > > > --- In xl7@yahoogroups.com, "steve_the_composer" <smw-mail@> wrote: > > > > > > I don't know off hand. Hmmmmmm. When you say "toggle pattern follow on/off," does that mean you are have the trigger buttions set to Select Patterns? Would be nice to be able to step through the pattern while editing and hearing the changes without rushing to do changes as the bar races by... > > > > > > > > Cheers! > > > > > > > > > >
