More SIMM problems - Protozoa ROM causing distortion on other ROMs

2012-05-10 by retroillumination

Hi folks,

I was just reading the recent ROM list / SIMM issues post, and I wondered if anyone could shed some light on this problem.

Using an XL-7 with os 2.00. Pressing the audition button shows these ROM ID's:

MSB:O14 Xtreme lead - displays 'XL-7'
MSB:005 Protozoa - 'P/123'
MSB:017 Composer - 'PROM1'
MSB:065 Techno Synth CY - 'TeCnO'

I can get the checksums from those ROMs later if that's any help.

All ROMs pass the diagnostic. The problem is - the sounds of the Protozoa cause a terrible distortion with some of the sounds of the other ROMs. The Protozoa sounds fine on its own. The other 3 roms play just fine together.

It's a shame because the Protozoa is full of great sounds.

Even when the individual track volume levels are turned right down, this distortion kicks in. When you bring in a Protozoa sound, it plays, but it turns the sound from the other ROMs into a very extreme type of distortion.

Has anyone had any similar experiences, or any ideas?

I did once have a Composer ROM that failed its diagnostic with a 'bad block' message. This ROM used to make crackling noises, kind of very similar to a scratched vinyl, on its drum presets. It was quite subtle. But this with the Protozoa is far from subtle!

Thanks!
Matt
