I think I understand what you want to do as far as using the sub outs. Think of them as a function of the synth engine, not the sequencer. As far as I can see, there are two ways to set the sends through the subouts: (1) through preset edit mode [layer level MIX OUTPUT] and (2) through the global MIX OUTPUT [on a channel by channel basis] when you override the preset settings. From what I can see [that is to say, I have tested it] with (1) you could for example have layers 1 and 2 of a preset panned hard right and layers 3 and 4 panned hard left.* I assume if you sent that out one of the subs, you would have what you want. You could get much fancier with either lfo or CC control to do automated or manual crossfade/panning. With (2) it looks like you could do the same think with different presets on different channels. Again, I haven't tested it. Keep in mind only main is routed through the FX. But if you want separate outs, perhaps you are doing outboard FX processing. As for the TRS/returns, I have used the subs for passive mixing. Audio returned via the subs gets summed I think with the main out. I am not sure what cables I have used. As I assume you know, the returns do not go through the E-Mu synth engine. *As for the location of the pan settings, (1) within the preset, the layer level base setting is on the menu that says AMPLIFIER and (2) on a channel by channel basis, pan is on the basic channel display. Hope this helps. It says to use stereo/ balanced/ trs jacks to use the subs like inserts for external gear, so the ring can return to the main mix outputs. If you are using an audio interface with balanced inputs, if you ran a balanced cable out of the CS and into the audio interface (as opposed to an unbalanced one), would that cause any problems due to the ring returning? > > Any other tips about using the subs for direct outs would be appreciated.
