Also you want to set "MIDI mode" to "multi" and use "MIDI Enable" for
appriopriate channels - both settings in the "Master"menu. You may
want to use other parameters available there (reacting to Program
Change and Program Change mapping), but I wouldn't bother at the
beginning. Realtime controllers, mentioned by Matt, can be mapped to
"physical" MIDI CC controllers, e.g. you can set the filter cutoff and
resonance to CCs 74 & 71, which afaik is typical for Yamaha gear.

Personally I wouldn't change P2500 for P2000 - I played a bit on XK-6
and I found the ability to use the 16 buttons to access pages of
Preset menu very comfortable.
