If we are talking about the simple procedure:
 - set some sounds
 - records some stuff
 - recall the pattern
 - be stunned with a different sounds that you have had assigned,
then it never happened to me. I would assume your CS can have some
flaw on the hardware level. Also, if you could come up with a
repeatable crash procedure, that would allow us to try it and bring
more details.

Speaking about making dumps: If you have a PC with Windows, use MIDI
Ox. It can record the SysEx dump initiated on the instrument side, so
you can just dump the whole bank at once. With regard to the patterns,
I'm afraid you *have* to use eLoader for patterns, although I think
the pattern dump can be requested with some SysEx sent from MIDI Ox.

If you have a Mac with OS X, there were a nice app mentioned (on this
list, or maybe on the P2K one), quick search on Google reveals this
one: http://www.snoize.com/SysExLibrarian/ - I never used it, though,
but probably will try.

If you have a Linux, you should be able to send SysEx using a MIDI
cable and a paper clip (and calculate the control sum on the fly).
With handshaking. In the complete darkness.

Overheating?

Anyway, wish you getting it cleared soon.
