Re: [xl7] So many midi sources so little input jacks

Hi Matt,

2011/5/9 Matt <somatt@...>
> I have a midi sampler with pads and fx (sp808) and 2 midi fx (kp3 and electrix warpfactory). I want to be able to play on the pads, and use the fx knobs and kaoss pad and have the command station record this via midi as sequence to play back into the fx and pads looped, quantized. Do I need a midi merger?

MIDI Mergers can be rather expensive [
http://www.midisolutions.com/ordirect.htm ], maybe you may consider
getting one of eMagic MIDI interfaces. There are two types of Unitor8
- Mark I has only serial RS-232 connector, while Mark II features USB
as well, so it can be used with any modern equipment. However, they
can be quite expensive as well, since they both provide extensive
VITC/LTC syncing facility, which you won't use anyway. In this case
you can get eMagic amt8, which is far cheaper.

All of them provide 8 INs and 8 OUTs, and you can store up to 32
different routings and even use MIDI Program Change messages to change
them (on the specific channel of the specific IN port). And, of
course, all of them are full-fledged MIDI interfaces, not only a MIDI
merger. I use two stacked Unitors (Mk I & Mk II), which route MIDI
messages amongst ten MIDI devices, syncing them to the MP7. While you
need a PC (or a Mac) to configure the patches, later you can use the
MIDI interface as a router in standalone mode.

Right now you can find two Unitors MkII on eBay, but I would say the
price is a bit high. There's also one auction which mentions Unitor8,
but features photos of amt8.

Another option - if you are soldering-savvy or if you know someone,
who is - is to build one by yourself [
http://ucapps.de/midimerger.html - two INs only, the 5 x 5 solution is
provided here: http://ucapps.de/midi_router.html ].

HTH,

Bruno
