If you're organising Michael Jarre karaoke party-XL-7 should be on top of your list:D
Out of four roms I use now, Xl-7 is the least gansta when listening to its presets and patterns only. It is 90% electronica and progressive rom, its sounds are quite edgy and powerful.
Then comes POP rom, which is most versatile in your sounds spectrum, then both DRUM and PHATT being the grooviest, phattiest and dirtyiest to my taste.
If you want to see number of basses (or any sounds) just compare the lists from each manuals. I think PK2 kills it when number is concerned. Protean DRUM only has few, but it shines in acoustic and drum machines area. However, as you mentioned you can work on raw sounds and tweak almost anything out of any rom.

Unlike POP rom it doeasn't cover typical GM pallete like piano sounds (it has some great keys though, like the clavinet preset which sounds rich and bright).
electronica sounds the closest to what I'm doing recently. As I'm
going to use it mostly for "having a rhythm section" in my music and
provide a heartbeat for my other synths, basses and kits will do
(however, even MORE basses than in P2K?). Regarding the piano sounds,
I've heard MP7 is capable of making some decent electric pianos... I
also hope that the raw instruments offer somewhat wide palette, so
with the use of filters and some modulation I can get something not
targeted towards the neybahood gangsta.
