then you don't need to consume preset-memory every time you want to assign
a preset going to a sub-out.

my ex-wife is a big fan of hardcore techno. she isn't into gear at all,
but she knows what a TR-909 sounds like. i briefly had a TR-909 and at
first i was really disappointed with it, but as soon as i hooked up a
distortion pedal to the kick-out she came running in and wanted to play
with it! running the XL-ROM 909 kick through external distortion sounds
just as good as the real thing. and with the CC-sub-out trick (above) i
can use the *SAME* 909 preset (no need to save different copies asigned to
different outputs) on a different channel for everything that isn't a
kick... or even split the kit among more than two outputs, and several
outboard fx.

here's the weird thing for me... i have a lot of synths; K5K, fs1r, EX-800
w/ atomohawk, XD-5, homemade 303, etc... and i'm making more music with
this (picture, below) this then i've ever done with all of the gear hooked
up - http://smasher.org/tmp/IMG_0495.JPG

the XL7 is set up so each of the six outputs is a mono send into a rack
effect box. in addition to using CCs to assign the presets to different
outputs, each pattern pans each sound hard-left or hard-right: six
outputs!

the onboard fx don't get used.
