Re: [xl7] CS + ASR-X combo

2011-02-27 by Matt

I am mostly using the esi for drums because the roms on the cs sound thin, I use the sh-32 for switching up the beat with the drum arp, and for synthy stuff and some cs patches I made for wobbles and basslines. Kaoss pad for glitch effects. Mixer fx for verb (which sucks).
I don't need a studio full of gear but I use most of my stuff pretty regularly. I have only been doing this for under 2 years so I am still choosing my tools. I buy stuff for less than market and if I don't enjoy it I flip it for market just as fast. Recently I have been dumping gear. Sold alesis d4 I got free. Sold microkorg for what I paid into it.
I9;m very prolific right now as far as making patterns on the cs, but I haven't yet really made a 'song' or 'album'.This is because I have tons of ideas and moving to fast to record them or perfect them. That's adhd for sure. So far most of my best stuff is lost forever.
I record almost everything that I do record live in one take. Usually on 2 channels after a mixer. I try to program patterns on the fly. I try to keep everything new and fresh and freestyle.
Currently making space gangsta/glitchy wobbly crunkstep. I write a beat then I write raps and perform/record them live 5 minutes later in one take and currently if it sounds shoddy I don't give a shit as long as I'm having fun and the idea is sketched out. I'm not getting paid for this... yet.
Need to work on: song structure, recording and mixdown.
Need to collaborate more. With all types of artists. I learn new stuff from everything. I really like to incorporate new styles. I have been incorporating lots of reggae styles. I love the guitar riffs from beat garden perfect for reggae. I have also been trying to do tribal beats with weird triplets congas and hand drums.
1 year ago my friends said "u sound ok I guess but not my style". Now they think I sound good and invite me to play the party. So that's a step up for me.
Need to build my artist roster... my friends and I are trying to start a performance crew/label for fun.
Cs best purchase ever... no matter what I plug it into.

Maybe rich was the wrong word. I mean wasteful, actually. There are too many clowns on Youtube running around town with a ton of stuff midi'd up making really poor electronic music with a ton of gear. Used hardware is cheap these days. I'm not talking joker $100 stuff like chewed up Electribes and MC-303's and toy stuff like that. I'm talking Genoq Octopuss's and modulars, and cult analog synths, etc. Anyone can collect shelves of junk that's buggy and has seen the rounds. I'm not talking stuff like that. My point was that it's better to have two or 3 machines and just use those machines to make music with, verses constantly chasing gear for years on and end never make anything. There is a point where a person needs to say hey, I need to record some music here with what I got and the next box isn't going to help me or serve me any better if I don't stop this mad chase for kit all day long. That was my point. I'm guilty of this. Few people have the nuts to look in the mirror that way and actually take in account of this verses the mad gear rampage that most of us fall into. Some of the best albums ever recorded was made with very little and I don't think most people are aware of this (or care). Anyways, do what you guys want. You don't need my blessing or permission. I'm just sayin. :)
