I haven't been creating patterns in a while, but what I used to do is copy the pattern I was working on to several consecutive slots. That way if I seriously messed up, I could go to the last perviously saved version.

Also, if you build patterns track at a time, you can delete tracks one by one. You can also erase data.

Of course, in the pattern edit menu system, you can revert to the saved version, but if you have added 3 or 4 new layers, they >>all<< disappear.

Forgetting to save is indeed a problem. It doesn't hurt to make periodic backups to a computer with e-loader either.
