This is exactly it.  Switching to the pattern with the "*" by it (i.e. an
edited unsaved pattern) will sound bad.  This problem has already been fixed
and will be in the next release (due out _very_ soon).

Careful!  You have to save before powering off or editing another pattern!
Any and all edits to a pattern will be lost if you power down before saving.
The moral of the story?  Save often!  =)
