ROMS are just ROMS. They have resources, such as samples/multisamples and presets For me, its more a matter of what someone does with them.  For example, you can take two layers of the same sine wave sample and program your patchcords, knobs, and other parameters to do whatever you want in a performance preset.

BTW, some people find ambient music boring; some people find techno boring. Some people deeply enjoy each of these genres. Its really a matter personal preference.
