there are only three boxes. what's to understand? :-) 

he's recording from his MPCx000 (an akai drum machine/sampler/workstation sequencer) into his MP7, & then laying some keyboard parts over the top. he wants a neater way to do this without moving midi cables & changing the master clock from MPC to MP7 & back again, before recording the whole shooting match into protools.
if the MPC can merge its own midi input onto its output, he's away & laughing. if not, he needs a merge box.
