Emu XL-7 & MP-7 User's Group

i've got an XL7 with these ROMs: XL, TSCY, beat garden

i'm doing techno stuff, so 808/909 samples are a good start for 
percussion. the 808/909 samples are good, but i want to use the synth 
engine to make them my own and be able to take full advantage of the 
real-time control available on the XL7 (and 99% lacking in the XD-5).

one of the neat things about the XD-5 is that one layer can 
amplitude-modulate another layer. i haven't yet found anything like that 
in the XL7, so i guess in that sense i'm limited by the waves in ROM...?

so i'm wondering if anyone has any tips on programming percussion sounds 
with one of these? since it ~is~ a modular synth with a lot of filters and 
waveforms, i might just have to go through some circuit analysis and 
theory or operation doco about some drum machines, and try to duplicate 
some of that that.

any other ideas? tips? tricks?
