In my opinion is better to  assign the effects to the main section, and do not "use the effect of the preset 1, or preset,2, etc..... 

In this way you don't have to enter the patch edit mode, going to the effect section, and change the settings....

Is better to have a global effect section per PATTERN, that works for all the midi tracks and its patches.  

I normally have:

1 dry channel
1 channel with reverbs
1 channel with chorus/delay
1 channel with reverbs+chorus/delays. 

Some times I modify that but normally, is the combination that works for me more, so it's easier to assign the effects to the patches on the sequence.  

But I always proceed to give priority to the effects into the sequences, than use the effects assigned to certain patch

someone, please correct me if i'm wrong... i'm not sure if i really 
understand this, or if there's a better way to do it...

in multi-mode, the XL7 can either have effect settings based on one of 63 
multi-setups, *or* based on the preset used on a particular channel (or 
some combination of those, but in either case the effects are determined 
by either the global setting or a preset assigned to particular channel).

so... if i want to assign an effect to a pattern, i need to program the 
effect into a certain preset and use that preset on the special channel 
where effects are recognized.

for what i'm trying to do, it seems useful to make presets that are 
"empty" of sounds, but contain effects settings, then make sure that those 
presets are loaded in "tick 0" with a PC (program change) message.

the only way to do this is to record one or more notes in the "empty" 
preset, then use the note editor to delete the notes.

of course i ~could~ just leave a note there... but i'd rather not. or, i 
might do this on a channel that's driving an external synth, but that 
synth is ignoring PC messages.

if i want to change what preset is loaded (if i want a different effect 
loaded with the pattern), i would have to assign the track/channel to 
"ext"; then use the event editor to edit the program change at tick 0; 
then go back to the track/channel assign and set it back to "int" or 
"both".

do i have that right? is there an easier way to insert a PC message at 
tick 0? or, is there another way to have each pattern select effects?

even then, how do i "check" that the correct preset is being loaded, 
without having to change track/channel assignments?
