Re: [xl7] Re: XL-7 newbie question - connecting to keyboard + rack synth

Yes absolutely it's possible.

I don't know about the standard beats or preset patterns as I don't really use them but what you'll want to look at first is the 'channel assign' setting for each track of the pattern you are using. You'll find this in the pattern edit mode (press the pattern edit key). The MIDI channel each track uses can be changed and (crucially) each track can be set to play internal sounds (the beats), external devices (like the Q or the EPS), or both at the same time, if you like.

You also might want to look into the MIDI settings on the XL-7. Usually with a setup like that, the 'rechanelise input' setting will be on 'always' so the keyboard only plays the device the track you have selected is assigned to. There might be a couple of other settings in there you need to pay attention to, like the thru and merge settings. but actually I think that should do it for now.

To summarise, the important thing is setting the tracks in the pattern to play on the right MIDI channels either internally or externally or both.

Massimo,

Thanks for responding! That does make some sense, but need a little further help:

I've connected MIDI cables as you suggested and can play the EPS to get notes out of the Micro-Q. However, when I press any of the standard beats from the XL-7 they play thru the Micro-Q using the Micro-Qs sound set.

What I would like to do is: 1) play the Micro-Q through the EPS as a proper synth (already doing that now); 2) Play XL-7 patterns using the XL-7 sound set, and 3) use the XL-7 to sequence patterns & souns from the XL-7 and the Micro-Q. Can that be done within my current setup?

Much thanks,
--Scott

If you also want to control the EPS with XL-7 you could simply connect the other OUT to the IN on the EPS. Or alternatively the THRU from the Micro-Q to the IN on the EPS.

That way it can act as a controller and also be controlled from the XL-7. If you select a channel on the XL-7 that the EPS is set to recognise, it will play.
