RE: [xl7] Question for Andrew about the efx?

2008-10-03 by Andrew

I'm currently running a Lexicon MX300, and a Line 6 POD XT Pro for effects... and a DBX 166XL in front of an Aphex Aural Exciter 204 for dynamics. The Lexicon is a pretty good multi efx unit, but it leans heavily towards reverb/delay/chorus effects... which is primarily what I use it for. The Line 6 unit is more for fun than anything, but it does so much cool stuff, and it's layout is very user friendly. I also like the sound of analog, so the aural exciter is a must. The 204 has some improved circuitry, and they're the best I've heard, but you can find model 104 on ebay for usually less than 50 bucks... it'll be one of the best pieces of equipment you've ever bought. Also, a little compression never hurt anybody... running just a little bit will really knock that 'digital edge' off... plus it really makes things a little more forgiving when you're mixing something live.

I select those tracks (which are on their corresponding midi channels) and route them to send 2. I get the dry audio from those tracks/channels at submix 1, but the dry audio also shows up at the main-output as well. I understand that if I turn the send amout for send 2 past 0, that I should be hearing the wet audio at the mains, and the dry on the sub... but if it is set to 0, then I should only get the dry on the sub, and nothing at the main....but no matter what I do, I can't get it out of the main. And whenever I switch efx modes, (to apply efx to only 1 preset) the efx saved in whatever preset is assigned to the selected channel applies it's efx settings to every preset on every channel. Confusing, huh?

When I bypass the effects, as expected, there are no effects... cool. However when I try to only run effects on one preset, I end up hearing that presets stored effects setting on every channels preset... and whenever I set it up to apply its effects to all presets through the sends, it works pretty much the way I think it should, except that whatever I set to sends 2 and 3 (sub mix 1 and 2) also shows up at the main output, even with those send levels all set to 0. I guess what I'm trying to accomplish is, if I set it up to only run its effects on one preset, that the effects only appear on that
> preset, and not on all of them... or if I set it up to apply its effects to everything through the sends, that whatever I route to sends 2 and 3 will only out-put the dry audio at the 2 sub-mixes if I set their send levels to 0. Any ideas?
