Any of the later ones are pretty good. Drum = great acoustic kits, very well sampled, not too much space devoted to electronica (though have fun with the synth!) Vintage = awesome sampled vintage stuff, you know you want that CP-70 and the gigantic Taurus pedal in your next tune World = probably one of my favorites, though seemingly one of the more rare, awesome sounds that will set your music apart from the 1,000 other 808 kits As far as earlier ROMs, they're probably more suited to your genre. The MP-7 ROM, as mentioned, does have lots of funky/quirky stuff. The P2500 ROM provides some quality bread 'n' butter sounds to fill in when you need a real piano, strings or brass pad, etc. There's the holy grail piano ROM too, if you can find it. Best sounding 16MB piano ever. The perfect piano (on the ZR ROM) gives it a run for its money and provides another set of BnB sounds - in fact, I'd prefer that to the P2500 ROM. The two Papen ROMs are good too, pretty vanilla, but more sounds are always good. Hell, even the P/123 ROM has some good stuff. Then there's the two ORCH ROMs and the Siedlaczek ROM for orchestral sounds which are great, but don't really match up to a dedicated orchestral soft-synth. I mean, there's only so many instruments you can fit into 32MB per ROM. Remember too, that this box is a *SYNTH*, not just a ROMpler. Learn the in and outs of the synth engine and you'll be well rewarded with new sounds. If you approach the box like a Roland ROMpler (i.e. just play the presets cause there's not much else you can do) you'll be missing much of the XL-7's power. The ROM data and factory presets are only the base. You could make a whole bank of presets using nothing but a saw wave and have amazing presets. Hmm, maybe I should try that sometime... Finally, congratulations on your new purchase! -Aaron ----- Original Message ---- From: arglebargleuk <paul@...> To: xl7@yahoogroups.com Sent: Friday, October 26, 2007 1:08:52 AM Subject: [xl7] Re: best expansion roms??? --- In xl7@yahoogroups.com, "semj_1" <trunkey22@...> wrote: > > my xl7 is in the mail. i'm already thinking about what my next > purchases should be. i've heard the drum rom is good. probably also > planet or mophatt (one of those) would be necessary i reckon > > i need OPINIONS The internet's a good place for those :) I found the drum one a little too plain for the kind of drums I use although very clean and realistic. Probably good for rock stuff. My ultimate ROM is the Planet Earth which is full of cooky percussion, lacking only a decent set of tablas to make it the complete world pepercussion set. The mophatt is surprisingly good too. My final ROM was the ROb Papen Techno one which I found full of useable basses and dedecent 808/909 material. YMMV but there are some great ROMs out there if you can find 'em. > ps. i make ambient techno with hip hop beats ala boards of canada Sounds groovy!
