Thanks everyone.. So it is best not to use song mode correct? One last thing, how do I record in realtime in song mode.. when I select record it doesn't let me select my next/current pattern.. maybe the steps are wrong can someone just tell me the steps please?

Alas, no. You can personally blame me for that gigantic oversight. 
Songs were pretty much always the bastard stepchild of the XL-7. There
was always that unfortunate knowledge that there was no good way out of
song mode other than by importing the patterns, but I could never
justify spending much time on anything song mode related.

Someday, I'll do a v3... <sigh>
