Certainly don't worry about dredging up posts, it means you're using
search!

Make sure your tracks are set to external in the screen near the end of
the pattern edit menu.  Otherwise, it won't transmit program changes. 
Note that "both" is not enough, since it assumes that the chances that
you'd want to same exact program change on the internal synth as your
external synth is about zero, so it sends the pc only internally.
