In spirit of things that aren't 303s but may appear to be, I'm giving some
examples to the list of VERY non 303 things doing acid. Typically, when I've
ventured to do things like this, it's been for the purpose of developing an
acid line that would be difficult to achieve in a straight forward manner (
i.e. a 303 or my favored 777 just wouldn't cut it), but simply for the
purposes of demonstration, this time around I developed a few patches that
were designed to just emulate a raw 303.
The first two examples come from a Proteus 2500, the first is an example
utilizing a saw, and the second an example utilizing a square. The next two
examples both come out of a JV synth. In spirit of how much people
complained on the 505 not being able to sound like a 303 (or anything
analogue for that mater), I figured it'd be fitting for me to utilizing the
MC-505 as my JV of choice.
Again, the first one up shows off a saw, and the second utilizes a square.
On the saw example of the 505, I used a fairly heavy amount of delay just to
show how things can start to turn out when effects and such start coming
into play (never mind other timbres). Outside of the delay however, it was
still nothing more than a patch that I had created to emulate a raw 303.
In both examples I tweak the acid line in real time, just to show how the
patches react to such and also to help provide a better example of what
these two synths can do in this regard.
I'll further note that I'm not saying that these sound DEAD on like a 303,
more so that I believe they are passable/work as acid boxes and that if
thrown into a mix where they weren't the highlight, they could be hard to
discern from an actual 303. I'll further say that what I got out of these
synths truly wasn't anything spectacular, as there are a billion and one
synths out there that similar results can be accomplished with. It goes
that without saying, out of the box, you won't find a preset on either of
these synths that lend themselves to the sound you hear me pulling out of
them. But, as I think many of you will agree, you can't judge a synth by
it's presets.
In any regard, I'll let you all be the final judge as to the actual quality.
