RE: What is a Soniq Expansion ROM?

2006-05-11 by goddard.duncan@mtvne.com

>>I discovered I also have a Soniq card. This ROM has amazing samples in it.
Lots of arpeggiators
too. I can't find anything about the card.<<

sounds like you've picked up a flash card, lucky you!

I have the "sounds of the ZR" card in my pk6, & my first thought was that
you might mean "ensoniq" who made the ZR & were acquired by emu way back
when. but this rom isn't called "soniq", I don't think..... & anyway, you've
picked up a load of arpeg patterns too?

have a look at it- it may have the three intel flash memory chips &
something like "emu sound flash 32Mb".

there are some other ways to find out if it's a flash-rom, but I can't
remember them now.... one of them is an option to copy it, one is an option
to rename it.... this latter you could try without doing any damage.
somewhere in the "save" menu, I think.

the name "soniq" would have been put in by whomever authored the stick,
while it was still in the sampler or (I'm pretty sure this is an option)
after it went into a proteus box of some sort, maybe your mp-7 there.

there's a 5-character limit. so maybe whomever did the authoring had an
ensoniq sampler with these noises in it, or he just called it that for a
laugh. who knows? & then he copied some arpeg patterns onto it.....

anyway, if you can lay your hands on an emu ultra-series sampler with eos4.6
or thereabouts, you can author 16Mb or 32Mb of y'r own noises onto the
stick, & have the eos presets appear as proteus intstruments back in y'r
mp-7.
(you can also back up the contents of the stick so you don't lose them)

I do this authoring thing a lot now- I have three lots of 32Mb & one of
16Mb, which I have filled up with samples from my mellotron, analogue synths
& various found-sounds. being able to use the proteus synth engine on one's
own samples is way better than using the sampler to do the same, as the
proteus engine has better modulation routing & so on.
also, no whining hard drive to worry about in the studio or get damaged when
gigging.
