Evolution

2005-10-12 by steve_the_composer

Based on our conversation, I picked up a used evolution (on ebay). I
see the problem first-hand with the lack of midi in. Using the
SB/Creative midi i/o should solve your original problem.

As for the evolution, the usb midi out and the regular midi out seem
to work just fine. However, the keyboard "sucks" (IMO, to borrow
your phrase). It has the feel of a cheap toy electronic keyboard.
(You know--the ones with the speakers built in.) I tried all of the
keyboard velocity scalings, and have not found one that works for me
with heavy springs of the unit. (The knobs are nice, though; but the
button/display seems quirky.)

If you like the feel of the evolution and the midi out-->usb works
for you, you should still be able to used the SB midi in (as long as
the card doesn't have any conflicts).

(I hope no one takes my purchase of the evolution as an endorsement.
It seemed like a decent price to test it out. It may still work for
taking around to schools, doing arts-in-education stuff, and for
note entry/composing. As of now, I don't see using it for serious
performance. Well, maybe for turning on beats, arpegiators, etc.)

BTW, you can use e-loader's midi monitor to test both the usb and
midi outs of the evolution.
