without trying to dissect all the minor variations of your gear, suffice to say you should just hook up the XL-7 directly to your computer both in and out (in other words..you need a real 2 way midi interface) and then try to transmit the presets. A gameport MIDI adapter is a good inexpensive choice as long as your computer has a gameport, like on the back of an ancient, outdated 16 bit soundblaster sound card. Most computers I have seen that are anywhere near new dont have a gameport because USB is now used for game controllers rather than gameports.

It is likely that the XL-7 requires communication back to the computer to properly complete the preset upload, especially if you are seeing some activity on the midi out of the XL-7. Its trying to talk to whatever is loading the presets into it and getting no proper reply.

The Evolution midi controller i have has only a MIDI out (no in) but has a USB midi out as well. I don't believe the one I have (MK249c) is designed to receive MIDI over USB and retransmit it through the MIDI out but it sounds like yours is. Even with that being that case, the XL-7 should be able to talk back to the computer at the same level as the computer is communicating.

You should also make sure before buying anything else that you try to transmit the presets with nothing else connected to the USB bus. That means mouse, keybaord, etc. Dont touch the controls or keys on the Evolution while you are doing it, etc.

Sometimes the solution to a problem is to just use the right tools.
