You should absolutely be able to embed sysex in this manner.  It's a
fantastic way to extend the functionality of the sequencer.  In fact
the sequencer was all set up to record sysex, but the way the MIDI
subsystem was implemented made it difficult to get unadulterated
messages to the sequencer level.

PS. do note that many sysex commands take a little while to process, so
apply early as necessary.
