That's the most sensible way to do it, but you've used a 505 so I'm sure you know it's no substitute for one-button-press pattern call (as found on the MC-505, the Electribes, and the RM1x), especially if you want to change up your arrangement or experiment with structure. Dialing patterns live is like editing on an LCD, pattern call is like turning a filter cutoff knob.

If there's some way to select the next pattern via program change or even short sysex messages then I'm willing to do this remotely, but whether or not I shell out for an XL is entirely dependent on whether or not this feature is added.
