Is it possible to replace the touch strip with a common pitchbend wheel? 
and 
if the answer is yes, is the hold function still available?

Make sure that the pitchbend amount in the Controllers menu is set to
something other than 0.  Should be working by default though, if you're
comfortable with it, just open up the unit and make sure that the
pitchstrip cabel is plugged into the main board fully.  If it is and it's
still not working, you may need a new one.  These are VERY easy to replace
though. it's just a sticker basically, so if you don't want to part with
your new baby to send it back to Emu, ask them to just send you the strip
and replace it yourself.
