Emu XL-7 & MP-7 User's Group

Isn't the MPC-1000 a totally different animal?  Actually I realize I have no idea exactly what 
it is even after just reading about it on the Akai site.  Is it essentially like an XL-7 but 
without ROM?  That actually sounds pretty tasty.
