what's your budget? this will determine your choices. there's good stuff to be 
had, new or used, at any budget level these days. let us know how much $$ 
you've got to burn, and i can make some recommendations.

a word of advice, my very humble opinion: don't count on new gear to make 
your recordings sound better. if you've good cool songs to begin with, if you 
have a clean signal path through your gear, if you've got your dithering & 
other digital issues sorted out, and finally if you learn to use whatever gear 
you have to its maximum potential, then your recordings will improve.
