Make sure when using external gear you set up the those tracks' status
immediately to external. The second you record something into a XL-7 on
that track and the track status is set to both or internal, the Program
Change, Arp status, Volume, Pan and Mix status will be recorded onto
tick 0 of that track. If you forget, you'll need to do what Alex has
suggested and delete that information.
