if you have a PC use the USB port. if you're on Macintosh (like me) you
better have:

a)  a computer capable of running Mac OS 9.x - your "slightly old"
description would probably satisfy this.

b)  a MIDI connection of some kind.

for cheap MIDI connections, i've found the MOTU FastLane USB interfaces very
effective. 2 in/2 out with no power cable (bus powered) and a nice switch to
send the MIDI ins directly through to the MIDI outs. i have things wired so
that with the passthrough off, my MIDI sequencer (Digital Performer) can
control all of the synths, but with the passthrough on i can have my XL-7
drive everything else. nifty!
