I currently use an MC-505 (which I love), but I just heard about the XL7, and it sounds great. Has anyone had any experience with both machines, and if so, how do they compare? >>>Yep, I'm moderator of this list and the MC505 list. :) <<< What I love most about the 505 is the sequencer, and specifically, the grid/step recording features. It's so damn easy to program the thing - which is handy for a dummy like myself. Does the XL7 have an easy-to-program sequencer? >>>All of my comments are my owbn personal opinionl just so we get that out of the way asap. I think that in terms of ease of use and a fast workflow, the XL-7 beats it hands down. You don't have to stop the sequencer to enter any of the record modes or save, so you really can keep on working all day (caveats below) without having to stop your music. Where the 505 takes the edge is when it comes time to edit what you've previosuly recorded, as it has more options like groove quantize, and real-time transpose. The grid editing on the XL-7 is identical to the 505, except for the layout of the grid buttons (2 rows of 8, not 1 row of 16). The XL-7 even lets you sue the grid for adjustint gate time too. <<< Also, I've heard the sounds on the XL7 are even better than those on the 505, which is great (not that I think the 505's sounds are bad, but there's always room for improvement). >>>I had to sell my mc505 a few years ago, and when it was time for another "groovebox" I finally had it narrowed down to the 505 and XL-7. The XL-7won because it really does sound a lot better than the 505. Much cleaner sound, way more detailed, and the modulation options on the emu synths kicks butt over any other rompler (you get 24 patch cords per instrument, 4 instruments make up a patch, just like the 505). Also, you get digital out too, very nice. <<< How good is the XL7 at creating your own sounds/patches? >>>It's very easy witht eh 16 knobs, and deep editing via the menus isn't that bad either. <<< p.s. I assume you can't buy these in stores anymore, right? Is ebay the only place to find them now? >>>Nah, you can still find them in stores, they're not discontinued. <<< --------------- If I had to list areas where the 505 was better, it would be these: - Effects. The 505 just has more interesting effects, though I think the Emu reverb sounds better. - Groove quantize. The Swing quantize on the XX-7 is my favorite of any sequecner, but it's the only option besides straight quantizing. - Back up. At least the 505 has an out-dated form of data storage, the XX-7 doesn't have any except sysex dumps for your sounds, and the included E_Loader software for backup patterns and songs. Feel free to ask any questions, there's quite a few former 505 users on this list ;) rEalm The information transmitted is intended only for the person(s)or entity to which it is addressed and may contain confidential and/or legally privileged material.
