Triggers as RPS/RPPR (for Aaron)

2002-01-08 by erik_magrini@Baxter.com

Interesting idea Aaron. But for that to work wouldn't you have to put
those sounds (Preset with arps) on that unused track, in every single
pattern you create? Here's what I'm trying to compare it to, maybe you
can help me out.

When I had my mc505 (sorry to compare), I would set up RPS Sets to help me
keep the beat going while swithing patterns live, and to make the changes
less obvious. So one RPS key would trigger and latch a 4/4 drum beat,
another a HH pattern, a third would start a snare pattern, etc. This was
great, because I could slowly drop out the pattern rhythm instruments, and
turn on the RPS ones to take over. Then when I switched the pattern (the
new one was previously saved with the drums muted) the RPS drums would
keep playing and I could bring in my new pattern's drums as I saw fit.

I'd love to be able to use the XL-7's triggers for this same thing, but as
of right now I could only see doing this if I saved the "RPS Presets" I
make into each pattern ahead of time. Can you think of another way to do
this, or is this the only work around? I suppose it's workable, but
that's means I'd have to create a new blank pattern with those presets
assigned to what I think will be unused channels. It also means I'll be
fairly stuck with having to use the same Presets each time too, as they'd
have to be finalized and saved before I copy the pattern hundreds of times
across all my blank patterns. Any ideas on other work arounds?

> Q3. When the buttons are in "Triggers" mode I know it is possible to
send one note to an external device such as my sampler, but is it possible
to send a sequence of notes (a loop) that I have programmed (i.e. not just
an arppegiator of one note) <

The way to do this (at least as I see it) is to create your own arp
patterns (they are quite flexible) and put them on some unused internal
channels (like 14B or something) and turn the volume down for that track.
Turn arp transmit
on and then that arp pattern will play external gear. Note that
"arpeggiator" is probably an insufficient word for what arp patterns
really are. The are much like RPPR or RPS features when in pattern mode
(as opposed to up/down type modes).
