the patters work with the XL-7 ROM, but that is not the same thing as the
XL-1 ROM (same samples, different presets). not entirely sure if one can get
the XL-7 patterns to work with XL-7 presets loaded into the user area - i
think the patterns look for the ROM presets that just aren't there.

as to recording Sys-Ex dumps in a MIDI sequencer - why bother? if you are
Macintosh enabled, get a Sys-Ex dump utility:

SysEx 4.5.2 for Mac OS 9.x and earlier:
http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macos/16125

SysEx Librarian 1.0.4 for Mac OS X:
http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/13726

VersionTracker doesn't find anything for Windows, but there are some:

MIDI-OX is fairly capable: http://www.midiox.com/

and Send-SX which JUST does this stuff: http://www.bome.com/midi/sendsx/

i haven't used either of these but the sites look promising.

the chief advantage of dedicated System Exclusive tools, in my mind, is that
most sequencer apps complicate the simple "send this file to the synth"
operation. these little apps JUST send system exclusive to the synth and
receive messages from the synth - no complicated tweaking tempo and starting
at the beginning of the dump etc. i dunno, maybe that's really easy, but i'm
soft of lazy when it comes to sys-ex stuff. :D
