Right symptom, wrong reason. Reading ROM is no different than reading memory. The reason that the MPC is quicker to play a note is because it is not a synthesizer. No patch cords, no 6 stage envelopes, no 50 different 12 & 6 pole filters, no pattern arps, no effects by default, etc. The XL-7 (and to some degree the 909 too) is a powerful synthesizer in addition to sequencer.
