If you load up a pattern into a sequencer with some sort of List edit (other than the one built into the XL/MP-7), you'll see that there's a bunch of CC info (vloume pan, bank msb, bank lsb, etc) sent at the start of every measure for all tracks with data on them. Cutting tracks to the clipboard will remove the note info, but it leaves the other initial CC messages, and that's why the track mute remains lit even after you erase the notes. I think even the Erase Events function still leaves some info on the track too. Just FYI... rEalm Tracks that are empty should be muted (dark). Tracks that contain data but are muted should flicker (currently they don't). The Track Mute function on the XL-7 is extremely rudimentary compared with the competition. There are no subgroups (like the separate drum mutes on the 505), no mute inverse (505), no way to "hold" the current settings into the next pattern (505), no mute memories except the setting stored with the pattern (RM1x), no exclusion groups to cut other tracks off (MC-80), no "all on" or "all off" functions and most surprisingly no solo mode (all of the above)! Luckily these are all features that should be relatively easy to add - the biggest problem is finding ways to assign new features to the physical interface.
