This is a solution, but it isn't a very good one. It breaks the creative flow when building a pattern (press pause, enter notes, press play, listen to result, repeat), and isn't an option at all when performing live. Anyone who's ever performed on an X0X style interface will know how much fun it is, but having the sequencer constantly pulling the pattern out from under you makes this clumsy. The grid record mode on the XL-7 is very cool, but it needs a "manual" mode where the measure being edited will not change unless the user presses <- or -> buttons.
