years later - almost done....

So, just when you thought that you have seen the last of my infamous
Blue Meanie Wiard System, I have finally all of the completed metal
work in place, with powder coating and anodizing remaining.....

Posted in the photos section are new photos of the system, front and
rear views....

Hi Mr. Chang
All dressed-up for your dream date with Disney eh?
=)
Kudos! It's a knockout.
Just because i favor a panel aesthetic that looks just like your
system-after a close-range fragmentary grenade explosion....doesn't
mean that i don't appreciate the value in other, more elegant, schools
of thought.
(just don't tell the monitor engineer at the Redcat to plug the direct
box 'into out jack on the blue one' when you're setting up!

Doc,

Right next to the Wiard on stage will be my trusty Serge, which
vaguely resembles a trash can with knobs....!

What has been interesting is finding a creative solution for a stage
mixer - I really didn't want to drag a big console on stage, and I
didn't want to waste money on a Mackie that I would use once....

I am using a tcelectronic STUDIOKONNEKT 48, which I am presently
beta-testing for TC. It has 12 analog inputs, 10 digital inputs,
built in DSP for Reverb and Buss compressor and can run free standing,
or as a firewire computer interface. It will run at 44.1, 48 and 96k,
24 bit, with 48 bit internal processing.... Plus, it supports 5.1
output. A really great box....

Am I the only one who can't see these? It shows that Gary's folder is
empty.

Mark,

You are correct - I couldn't move the photos into the folder, so they
are at the very end of the "interesting packaging" folder...

I was thinking the same thing. Looks like a nice piece of kit. If you
post a more detailed review elsewhere, would you post a like here Gary?

Greetings Mr. Chang,
When you have the time, it would be a thrill to hear your observations
of what successes or failures you have had in performing electronic
music in surround. Seems to be very little discussion about this
subject, especially concerning quad or 5.1 live performance.
The big Eventide supports 5.1 and I'm wondering if you use the
StudioKonnekt48 ADAT outputs for surround ?
Wishing all of you tremendous success at the RedCat Theatre !!

I'm really interested in that interface, but the net is rife with horror stories about the quality and stability of the TC drivers. Have you encountered any problems?

When I have more time, I can discuss this topic in greater detail....

Because the film industry converted to the 5.1 format in 1990 (from
the former surround sound format), I have had a lot of experience
creating music in 5.1 - my first film in this format was Under Siege.

IMHO, 5.1 is a breakthrough format. In a world where every record
lable is saying that everyone is going to mp3s, TV will be completely
5.1 in the US by 2009, and there are more 5.1 audio systems in homes
than ever before.

When I was at Calarts, studying with Subotnick, all the electronic
music created there at the time was quad. Multichannel really creates
a more intimate circumstance for the music - quiet music can be easily
heard in great detail, and dynamics of the music is quite a bit larger
than stereo - after all, you have the total power of 5 speakers
instead of 2.

Seems to be very little discussion about this

I have a TC system 6000, which I use for 5.1 reverb and as the
mulitband master compressor/limiter on the master bus.
The Studiokonnect does support 5.1 monitoring - it can be uesd as the
bass management system, (diverting low frequency information from the
satelites to a common subwoofer).

Thanks so much - I believe that there will be someone recording this
event, so perhaps some of it will be web viewable at some point!

Chris,

Yes, on Craig Anderton's site, there is much banter about the TC
Konnekt series and how dodgy their software is. (I am beta testing
this unit, so it has not been released in the US at the present).
Here is the low down on why I am still interested in this product....
It is true - there are some angry folks out there who bought
StudioKonnekt 24s who are angry with TC about releasing the interface
prematurely before the software was sorted out....

First off, there is no issue with any of the TC drivers when used in
the Windows platform. The problems that TC have had are entirely in
the MAC domain. I have tested the SK48 in both environments.

Regarding the Mac system operation, this unit's drivers seem to be
intact and stable. I am able to use the unit as an interface with
logic with very little incident. Presently, while configured as my
stage mixer, I can change levels, sends, pans and mutes from the
remote without any issues.

I can see how I would use the interface - I would configure the inputs
and outputs for my monitoring (so that the master knob controls the
proper outputs going to the monitors) and save the setup, loading it
whenever I use the unit for that situation. The majority of controls
that I would use can be addressed and adjusted on the remote control
or front panel. Of course, TC intends to fix the issues with the
control panel software application for the Mac before they release
this product, but even now, I can use this interface very well, even
with the crashing control panel app - I just don't load the
application while using it.

The issues really are in the use of the control panel application
concurrently with the remote control and another music application
that is playing audio through the unit. While the software is dodgy
at present, what is significant is that when the control panel
application freezes, the SK48 still continues to operate completely
fine - only the software crashes, and there is enough on board
processing going on in the unit that it actually can survive several
crashes and reboots of the control panel app and still carries on with
its tasks undisturbed by all of the mayhem....

I suppose that it would be all pointless if the box didn't sound any
good. The hardware is every bit as good sounding as the Apogee stuff
that I have, with a few very cool architectural features that makes it
very appealing.

Thanks for the mini-review, Gary.

It still sounds like the perfect interface for me, if the drivers are solid on the Mac.

I would use it in two situations:
 - With Logic and Max/MSP as my recording interface
 - With Max/MSP and my Buchla as a live quad mixer

From your description, it sounds like it would work fine for both these uses, as long as I didn't need to tweak things in the Mixer from the laptop, and instead only used the remote.

p.s.
Is the back of your "expansion cabinet" going to turn blue?

chris,

Although our choices in software and hardware are different, I have
the exact same plan in mind for the SK48 in my future. A computer
interface by day, and a gigging multichannel mixer by night....

Pardon me while I get up on my soapbox for a moment, but at last we
have a viable 5.1 live mixer!!! Up to this point, most 5.1 products
are found on the mothership developement systems of most manufacturers
- costing $$$$. So, as far as that is concerned, this is a ground
breaking product.

So now let's wait and see if the tc engineers can get their
application bugs solved....
