grant,
i`m far from the "most complete vcf collection" guy out here but having :
serge vcfx, vcfs, vcf2
wiard omni-filter, boogie filter, boogie hi-pass filter, borg 2 filter
doepfer a-122 (cem chip),a-124 ("wasp"),a-101-1 ("steiner" / vactrol),a-101-2 (lowpass / gate),a-102 (diode),a-108 (48db/oct / tapped outs)
i do find that they all have different sounds and uses but i don`t think i`ve obsessed over any one type - in fact, all too often, the vcf that ends up in a given patch is the one right in front of me at that moment. :^)
arguing about vcf`s is like arguing about religion or politics - when all is said and done, its just one opinion.
my own theory - you build`em, i`ll buy`em ! :^)

Hi gang,
Although I agree that filters are like spices (as mentioned in an earlier post), and it’s great to have enormous variety, sometimes one particular filter type just resonates with you (no pun intended). The first filter I owned was a 200-series lopass gate, and its character imprinted on me very strongly. It’s kind of like a dialect that makes you feel like you’re back home after being with city folk for a spell: needless to say, I come from Vactrolville.

The other analogy I use is that my filters are like band members: each has a personality, and I go to particular ones for certain tasks and sounds. Additionally, some instruments sound great through certain instruments, while others don’t: again, an interpersonal analogy can be made about playing well with others.

For a time a few months ago, I was enamored with the Alesis Philtre, which has a very peculiar and interesting sound and feature-set. I found myself running everything through it — nearly every patch on my Wiard/Blacet/Metalbox/CGS beast got treated in the end through the Philtre. It gave me instant glorpiness, any time, without any additional patching.

Okay, so it’s a little strange admitting on this list that I used an Alesis pedal to process my kick-ass Wiard modules. Bear with me. I really want to try out the Borg 2! I owned an original Borg for awhile, and it sounded great on everything...

Sadly, no Wiard modules were present at AHCali (or did I miss something?).

[wiardgroup] wiard at AHcali (was: Re: What is the big deal...)

Paul had two x/y controllers in his boxy borg-style
rack setup in the corner. Also, Robert Rich had a
noise ring behind a motm-style panel in his rig.
