I was thinking...

Wouldn't it be cool to have a 1200 series with the 4 S&H's and 4 slew
generators of the Woggle Bug? I could do a bunch of stuff with that...

When Grant finally gets the Auntie Oscillator into production is when
I will be turning one of my old thin line Haliburton Briefcases into a
nifty Wiard synth - all behind a Front Panel Express faceplate....

What is the "Auntie Oscillator"? sounds like a old design :P

Hi Gary!
unless that was a deliberate pun....
i think it's "ANTI"-oscillator----- and given the marketplace's
fetish for orthodoxy , it might be a very long time before such a
misbegotten critter is viable

I've been dreaming about a Wiard Easel to lately.

yeah man, if the woggle and anti(auntie?) comes out this year i will be in heaven, i have been looking forward to the osc. since grant told me about it a while back on the phone, this thing sounds wicked. and the wogglebug is nearly infamous at this point, well infamous to those in the know.

that's exactly what I have in mind, just add a few other modules and a
controller, but it in a pelican briefcase and it can go anywhere.
we've nearly got the modules, but who's making portable controllers
(apart from joysticks)?

Re: I was thinking...

a few times over the years...
(look back around message 152)
Prof. Richter has experimented with designs for complete integrated
instruments. These have ranged in scale from a very low cost (but
surprisingly well-appointed) 'microwiard'*** with an on on-board
stylus controller, to large, luxurious concepts like an Easel(that
would, of course, be commensurately priced.)
These concepts have languished for a variety of compelling reasons
but i think this alternative has always been lurking around in his
mind. Perhaps if he had a very clear idea of what type and scale of
instrument, and price-point would sell like hotcakes, he might be
motivated to work something up. The problem with large-scale
integration designs is that they impose a choice between catering to
the 'bug-music' (sic) aficionados or the 1V/oct. fans (with their
DVMs). 'Please all please none' is where these designs always tend to
founder, and Grant just plain can't afford to sit on such an expensive
up-front investment in material especially where hardware intensive
controller devices are involved.
Grant knows the fabled Easel from the inside out (literally) and
i've always been captivated by fantasies of where he could take this
fertile concept, but the Easel reportedly never recouped it's
investment for Don Buchla so i have to temper my ambitions for Wiard's
very modest resources with a sour dose of reality.

what would -everybody- buy?
;'>

PS: i'll bet the BEST way to convince Grant to abandon the idea
forever is to even bring up multiple panel formats.....
;]

*** i say 'surprisingly' because i played it once and was shocked at
how SERIOUS that little bugger was!

Yeah when the new vco and the new woggle is done then we need to convince Prof. Richter.

While I agree that 'Please all please none' is a slippery slope, I
believe where Grant's designs perhaps excel most is their ability
to produce sounds that are incredibly useful musically, REGARDLESS
OF HOW A PARTICULAR INDIVIDUAL DEFINES "MUSICAL." From Wogglebug'd
glitch noise to Olivier's beautiful soundscapes to Gary's "Kingdom
Hospital" work to Isotope 217's jazzy hip-hop, the Wiard seems to
me the most genre agnostic electronic instrument ever invented. I
have heard Grant say before that he'd like The Wierd to be usable
as a child's toy as well as a professional's instrument!

Whether Grant eventually decides to produce a "normalized" single
panel synth or simply elects to provide a laptop case designed to
house 1200-series modules, I am certain it will prove exceedingly
useful for all musician-types. (That includes my 2-year old son,
Ethan, whose budding talent on the Wiard joysticks has replaced my
PSIM as primary source of low frequency oscillations to drive twin
JAGs. How's that for MARF?) I have no concerns re: Grant's ability
to engineer adequate flexibility into his design. The keys will be
to conceive a user interface that makes it sufficiently easy for
novice synthesists to create sounds that they find pleasing and to
introduce said instrument into the public consciousness. Perhaps
Grant could name it the "Wiard Easyl?"

> what would -everybody- buy?

Toilet paper (to steal from Gary's previous MARF suggestion)

Just my penny or two's worth,

Chris

well, Synthesizers.com makes a dern good normal keyboard style controller, Doepfer's got a
ribbon controller..and then there's the Haken Continuum, which of course is amazing but
unobtainable till I stumble upon a hefty load of cash.....but,,,,,,,,,,,
are there any touch-plate style Buchla-esque beasts out there that wouldn't require a black-
market kidney sale?

I am afraid that I have not been able to find a durable and playable
tactile input device that is worthy of the time and commitment spent
to learn and physically master it that doe not cost $$$.

I, too, gagged on my sandwich when I first saw the Continuum
Fingerboard. Then I met the inventor, and examined the device, and
decided that the device was probably going reliably work 10 years from
now, anad that Lippold was a very nice man who was interested in
standing behind his device. So, over the period of the rest of my
life, the $$$ for the Fingerboard is too bad.

At the Namm show, Don showed the soon-to ship 222 Kinesthetic Input
port which he mentioned will have a midi output (unlike the rest of
the 200e Series). Aside from the touch plates, it also has a pair of
electronic 'rings' that project infared bach to a sensor mounted in
the module - outputting a corresponding voltage according to location
and movement....

An esthetical portable casing could be nice, ultimately, but before that, I wish grant would
find an ergonomic alternative that would make obsolete the use of multiples, mixers, and
vcas...those anonymous hiding-knobs-patch-cords are confusing, and the few times I've
used an "optimal" fixed patching setup ended up to be a bit tiresome and uncreative.
