Remix Mag review, etc.

Remix Mag review, etc.

2001-12-06 by transducr

hiya grant & co.

i've been lurking on this list since it started and i thought it was
about time i finally post something...
i just got back from the AES convention in NY and picked up a
free copy of Remix Magazine (alog with a throng of others) while i
was there. so i was going through the stack when i noticed the
word "Wiard" on the cover of afforementioned periodical.
there's a pretty long review and the summary gives the Wiard a 4
out of 5! (i didn't ruin it for anyone did i?). congrats grant! it's good
to see a little more press coming your way and good press at
that!
also, while i'm here, i was wondering how the Micro-Wiard was
coming along... are you still considering a stylophone sort of
keyboard? are there any other cost-effective options that you've
been exploring? from experience, those stylophone keyboards/
pens get pretty rough as time goes on and aren't the most
usable thing in the world. they're cute at first but after a short time
the novelty really wears thin and you wish there an easy way to
quickly move back and forth from one side of the keyboard to the
other. is there a way to make a touch sensitive keyboard cheaply
(with respect to how much the stylophone keyboard would be)?
a poor man's mini-buchla keyboard?
just a few thoughts...

-jack america

p.s. have you ever considered doing any strictly audio designs?
like mic pres or compressors?

Well, I wouldn't say "GREAT" but it has been, at least, - good- for
getting SOME discussion on the board.
I'm thinking that maybe we should all just kind of randomly hurl
non-politically-correct ephithets at one anotherto keep things
lively!!!
ok....
I'll go next....

Hey Grant!!! You are a big peckerhead

hmmmmmm
well it's not quite as good, is it? but with practice......
(I could call Mike Firman a buttnugget)

well, i think when i said "great" i was more referring to mark's
accidental posting of said "non-politically-correct ephithet" in a
public forum and then writing to clarify that we are indeed friends. i
thought it was really funny.
but don't get me wrong, i think that we should be as crude and non-pc as
possible while addressing one-another on this list!

Re: Remix Mag review, etc.

2001-12-06 by drmabuce

see?!! it works!!! (BTW what IS that -blue- thing up there???)
it DID generate some discussion ;']
in fact, it's probably the funniest thing I've seen on a synth board
in YEARS! what a gloriously un-ironic prat fall!
re the micro:
I visited Grant this summer and was privileged to get to play with a
prototype. IMHO this gadget is HOT! There is nothing 'micro' about the
sound. As far as the stylus-kbd goes, the inclusion of the modal
alternate kbd strips is more powerful than seemed to me at first.
They take the 'sting' out of the clumsiness of pecking-out onventional
kbd shapes with a stylus.
I'm no production expert but I doubt that Grant could hold his
price point and offer more than -one- touch-sensitive pad. But there
is no reason why the micro could not be played with any external
1v/oct CV source and a trigger/gate.
  just my $.02 worth,

Hi,

I'll take the opportunity (of having my name "mentioned" here) to
post a little query.

On the SMOG (Serge Modular Owners Group) list, the members are
putting together a CD (probably a home produced CD-R) of material
that demonstrates the possibilities of the Serge system. Members
of SMOG are submitting material and one of the members (one who
has the equipment to do this) has volunteered to gather this stuff
and put it together into a CD.

Should we do the same thing? Anybody think this is a cool thing to
do? Any takers for the "master-gatherer" position?

Buttnugget indeed, dear Doctor! ;-)

Well, I'm glad to see this list has a sense of humor about it.

On a more boring note. I am happy to say I finally "get" the Buchla 248 mode
on the Miniwave Chip. It took me a lot of staring and then , finally,
reading the fine print. (really, I guess I just skipped over it last time!)
now it all makes sense.

It turns out to be the same kinda thing some folks were talking about on the
DIY list a while back for a multi stage envelope. Except here it is in
descrete physical units insted of on one circuit board. Cool.

Good idea Michael.

I'd be willing to help with the technical side of this, since I use a fairly
capable DAW system that would work well for such a project. But I may need
help with the 'administrative' aspect of gathering tracks & sorting them
out, etc.

Any other volunteers?

Mike

Buttnugget indeed, dear Doctor! ;-)
