Kurzweil K2500R "please wait..." issue, complete service manual sought

Kurzweil K2500R "please wait..." issue, complete service manual sought

2014-03-31 by Adrian Corston

Hi there,

Short summary: I am looking for a copy of the complete Kurzweil K2500R
service manual with schematics. I've seen the one on Scribd (missing
the schematics) but would like the whole thing if possible.

Longer story:

I have a K2500R which cannot proceed past the "Please wait..." display
on boot. Pressing Exit does not appear to invoke the boot loader as it
should (i.e. nothing visible changes). I can press 4-5-6 to start the
button scanner and it appears to works OK (LEDs show which button is
pressed) but the display does not update in this mode.

I found one discussion which sounded like a similar issue, with
suggestions that either:
a) the power supply is on the edge of failure and some of the power
rails are OK but others not, or
b) there was an issue with the main CPU.

The partial service manual on scribd.com (missing the schematics) has
some test procedures that I will follow, but I'd like to try to find a
complete copy if possible.

Thank you, denizens of VSR for your help!

Cheers,
A.

Thanks Daniel (and also thanks to RJ who sent me a copy too) - yes, I received the service manual. I replied to let you know that I have received it but regretfully my email provider (dreamhost) seems to be blacklisted, so my response were rejected. Here's hoping that yahoo isn't blocking me as well, and that this one will go through to the list!

The service manual is quite helpful, but unfortunately the power/audio PCB/schematic from the K2500R that I have doesn't seem to be included - there are K2500/X and K2000 power boards in there, but no K2500R. But I've had some progress regardless and will report more in a week or two after I return home from a trip and find some more time to work on it!

Thank you!

Cheers,
A.

The K2500R used the a K2000R power supply with a couple of updates, mainly some jumper under the board for incresed current flow and the 7812 regulator for digital was upgrade to a 78T12 that handles another half amp. If you look at yours, you will see the silk screan says k2000R.

Hi Daniel,

I'm dealing with the same issue on a Kurzweil K2500. I suspect it's power supply and want to ensure that the correct components are in place and that all the voltages are good. If you could share the manual and schematics with me too, I'd be very grateful. I notice you are quite active on the Korg MS2000 group as well, I've posted a bit about DSP repairs on that.

If the power supply is the same as the K2000 then it will be simple enough to get that info.

Sometimes thought the devil is in the detail and if there are upgrades to handle more current then the correct schematic and service manual would be critical.

Thank you...!

I will send you the service manual direct - my unit is a K2500R (rack)
but I think the K2500 (keyboard) schematics and board layouts were all
present and correct. I've determined that my unit actually works OK
after an hour or so of warming up (even though I live in a relatively
warm area), which firmly points to bad capacitors. But a recap is on
the back-burner for me at the moment, too much other stuff on my plate
:-( Lots of boards to remove to get to the power supply board at the
bottom of the rack!

Cheers,
A.

To get to the "please wait" message would require a stable power supply. Hit EXIT when you get to that message and enter the diagnostics.

Thanks for the tip.

My instrument gets past the ‘Please wait…’ and I can hear the hard drive attempting to initialize but pressing EXIT doesn’t get me to the diagnostics as expected. Some There are other signs of life, and buttons are responding but the display is stuck at “…waking up scanner.”

I presume this means the scanner board is not talking to the motherboard. I want to be sure the scanner / audio board has all the right voltages before I go any further. I have a replacement set of PLD chips should that be the root cause but I’m not planning on risking them until I verify the basics.

That said, I’d appreciate hearing from anyone who has successfully fixed the same problem?

The scanner reads buttons and communicates via a bi-directional serial port to main cpu.
Waking up scanner means that main cpu is sending a code for the scanner totry again to communicate with it.
Try hold down buttons 4, 5, 6 during power up. This is binary level diagnostic for just the scan processor. The 8 LEDs light to indicate the 8 bits on or off state.
All buttons should cause different LEDs to light.

Thanks for the tip!

As soon as I can get back into my workshop I’ll try this. I’m sure that it responds, by flashing LEDs and then walking through a sequence, one LED at a time.

Are you saying that once in that mode, the scanner should detect any button presses and respond by displaying a different binary code using the LEDs…?

If so, then I suppose the diagnostic is in the service manual with a corresponding table of buttons & codes?

Entering the machine level binary diagnostics is not in the manual. 456 after a normal start up that uses the display is.
Make sure you hold 4,5,6 down BEFORE AND DURING pressing the power switch. Then release. This is to test the button scanner processor only without it having to send data through a port and have the main engine display it. Each led reps a bit of the 8 bit bus and each panel switch when depressed will have a different pattern. Wheels and keys on keyboard model also do this.

If this works, then the scanner is working. Then the scanner is AWAKE, indicating a communication issue between the two. Also the effects processor has a port to the scanner. The scanner use a 32 meg clock, as does effects chip.

Re: [vintagesynthrepair] OT Invitation

2014-06-27 by Daniel Forró

To all group members living in Japan:

Japanese main TV channel NHK found me enough attractive from all 128
millions of inhabitants here and selected me and my CS80 for their
well-liked series Yomigaeri Maisuta (Master of Renovation).

It's half documentary and educational, half entertaining program,
which introduces somebody who has something rare, old, special - it
can be anything. That thing is repaired, restored, renovated, and the
story about the owner, the thing and its renovation is recorded, and
these sequences are then commented by the guests invited to TV studio.
Then owner and renovation specialist enter, renovated thing is
brought, owner can try it, comment, and express his thanks for the
renovation.

So this time it's about my life story, work, coming to Japan in 2003,
and mainly about a rare analog polyphonic synthesizer from my
collection - Yamaha CS-80 from 1979. As an expert in the field of
electronic musical instruments and long-year collector I have
established in my native country - Czech Republic - the only "Museum
of Electro-acoustic Musical Instruments" (between 1989-2003), and had
a good luck to buy this instrument in 90ies from one Christian radio
in Slovakian capitol Bratislava, as partly non working. Before my
moving to Japan I have closed the Museum and sold about half of
instruments (the most rare were bought by Technical museum in Vienna,
were restored and became the part of permanent exhibition there). But

CS-80 travelled with me to Japan together with many other machines of
my recording studio and the collection. In fact it did a world tour -
from Japan to USA, then to Slovakia, and then it returned to Japan. As
I understand electronics and do all repairs and maintenance of my
gear, I was going to restore also CS-80 but then an offer from NHK
came which I accepted.

Program is moderated by Nachiko Shudoh and comedian duo Taka & Toshi.

Besides three decorative TV celebrities for making various sounds the
production has invited as the special guest an excellent and famous
Japanese keyboards performer Minoru Mukaiya, a member of my favorite
Japanese jazz fusion formation Casiopea so finally I could enjoy
meeting him. He explained basic info about analog and digital
synthesizers in simple and entertaining way and showed a little bit
Minimoog, Roland vocoder and Yamaha Motif. We became quickly good
friends as well as with Mr. Kawazoe who did repair of my instrument.
BTW, that evening after the TV studio recording Mr. Kawazoe showed me
his huge collection of synthesizers - he owns over 400 pieces!

I'd like to invite you to watch this 60 minutes program, broadcasted
on BS Premier on:

July 2nd, 9 pm Japanese Standard Time

There's some archive of whole this series to found on the internet but
it looks like some Chinese pirate server :-)

I wish you good entertainment and all the best.

Hi Daniel,

What an awesome program!

Is there any way of watching outside of Japan? ….can it be streamed…?

Also, will it be subtitled in English…?

What happened to this broadcast then?
I flicked between the NHK stations but nothing about synths.
The usual cooking and food show and the news magazine show.

Shame.

Bravo Daniel! I really enjoyed the show and how you and everyone represented the synth community.

From Canada. Your timing on the last demos was perfect and it was so obvious how much you respected the men who worked on it.
