Kurzweil K2000 questions

Kurzweil K2000 questions

2004-12-05 by Gwydion Elderwyn

I got a Kurzweil K2000 with the sampling option early this year and promptly
upgraded it to the latest OS and max sample ram, and it's been running
great.

However, the LCD backlight has become so dim as to be practically
unreadable, and due to a cramped studio space I can't easily find a way to
shine a light directly onto the screen, so;

1. How difficult/expensive is it to replace/repair the backlight?

2. Where would I source the parts (I'm in Australia, but don't mind shipping
things from overseas)

3. Where can I get a service manual, so I've got some sort of guidelines to
follow?

My technical skills are, well let's say I know which end of the soldering
iron to hold and that's about it.

Thanks,
Gwydi

Hi Gwydi

The easiest way to get service information on current products is to do a
search of the Kurzweil web site. I would start by doing a search on
Kurzweil in Google. This should get you to the manufacturer.

Failing this we have a guy in the UK, Bill Greenhill who is an expert on
keyboards and has the rights to service warrantee repairs for several
manufacturers, including Kurzweil. I know this to be a fact as I do his
repairs here in the South East of England and I repaired a Kurzweil some
months ago for him. He carries in stock a wide selection of service manuals
and those he doesn't have he can usually get.

The same applies to component parts.

Bill's e-mail address is bill@... and his web site is
http://www.wdgreenhill.co.uk <http://www.wdgreenhill.co.uk/>

Hope this helps.

Regards

Brian G3OYU

Hi there.

there are a few sites providing backlights like backlights.co.uk. I
replaced mine recently and took some photos. I'm happy to share them
with you once you found the part. It is not that difficult but requires
care and a bit of soldering.

My hero! That's exactly the sort of site and help I was hoping to find -
and I'm very relieved to see that it's quite an affordable repair.

I've ordered an orange one (I'm used to reading orange LCDs from my JD800),
and I would definitely appreciate the photos you took and any other info you
think I should have.

Thanks so much,
Gwydi

Try DGarvin@... Duane is the service rep for Kurzweil (recently
purchased by Samick). He might be able to supply both manual and backlight.
You can also try www.telesisbacklights.com (?) for the part, or send them
yours and they can repair it. You can also try www.mitatechs.com and look
under the membership lists for a tech near you and for parts sources. Hope
this helps.

Re: [vintagesynthrepair] Kurzweil K2000 questions

you've already made your purchase - based on another message -- but i
have a cheap low-tech fix which i discovered accidently. i have several
older synths with low-level lcd panels which either can't be adjust or
are just plain dim (including my beloved k2000r). since i'm already
losing my vision and haven't had the inclination to attempt repairing
all of them, i've taken to keeping a cheap lcd flashlight (either a
small one i can hold in my mouth or one of those fancier ones with the
head-strap) which works surprisingly well for seeing the lcd's at the
distances that i need to.

i'm not trying to be a smart-a** here, it just works for me so i thought
i'd pass it along.....

Re: [vintagesynthrepair] Kurzweil K2000 questions

2004-12-29 by Gwydion Elderwyn

MessageJust wanted to thank everyone for their help. A new white backlight
arrived from Telesis today and less than an hour later it's in and running
great. I can read the screen again! Apart from the nerves that went
without removing the entire circuit board section to get to the LCD, it was
a straightforward repair :-)

BTW I got a full refund via Paypal for the money I originally sent to
backlights.co.uk - not sure what happened to them but their website is now
gone too. Anyway, all's well that ends well.

Take care,
Gwydi
