some help please

some help please

2004-04-27 by zephross

Hello All!!!

I recently purchased a P6 and mine was close to dead, wierd sounds
and blinky lights, well I decided to head out to the electronic shop
and try the battery replacement project, since my battery had leaked
and affected several IC's so I took those out, and the battery also,
did a pretty good job of cleaning it out and resoldering it back. I
happen to find at the electronics store a barrel drum type battery of
the same voltage, so I decided not to go with the lithium upgrade,
and I replaced the battery and bought 2 IC holders, WHALLA, I was
done none of the traces were bad and all traces and contacts were
verified. according to old crows website if after this procedure the
CPU may be bad. well it looks that way .......... I get the same
wierd distorted sounds as before. can anyone help?

Hello-
I've repaired a number of battery-damaged P6 boards, and I would first
question your statement that "all traces & contacts are verified".
It only requires one data or address trace to be incomplete or shorted to
another trace, and/or only one connector trace to be broken or shorted to
cause the kind of problem you describe.
Do you have a scope? It's helpful to view all the lines (clock, data,
address, etc) from the CPU - -

But the standard method is to use a continuity tester to verify every
single trace (using the schematic for comparison), beginning with the lines
from CPU to ICs 31 & 30, then to 26 & 24 to the RAM chip (and don't forget
23 & 25), looking for continuity & shorts.

Another thing to look for, when ICs have been replaced, is broken or
shorted traces underneath the new sockets.

It's a long & painstaking process; but it always pans out, in the
end; I've always been able to eventually get the board back to full
working condition, and I've never seen a dead CPU (so far) (fingers crossed).

As GMM said, you may still have bad part/traced there...

I would socket all ICs near the battery area and replace them,
as well as wiring the traces.

There will be parts that visually look OK to you but are actually bad.
The acid just gets anywhere.

I've done that repair on my Kawai SX-210 and helped a friend on his
P6 and in both cases it was not simple but definately worth the
effort.
