long time lurker, first time synther

long time lurker, first time synther

2004-05-20 by DI

I figured I should introduce myself here while things are quiet.

Paia Proteus 1.
Not working properly.
Just started fixing.

I found this years ago in  a thrift store. I found a pdf file of the build and user manuals a couple years ago, but never found the time. My plan of action is to pull apart and test and make sure it was put together correctly. If by some miracle it's something easy to fix, I'll create a little site for it with sound files, since I don't see alot out there. If it's something more difficult (expensive) I'll have to move on. It'll be exciting either way.

Best of luck to you in your endeavors. Of course you know that Paia is
still in business? If you get stuck... you could always call up their
great tech (Scott... I believe) and ask for help. They also offer
repair service on all of their products if you'd rather not do it
yourself. They typically charge only $15.00 per hour for repair. (Too
bad they don't repair other company's gear!)

Good luck whatever you decide...

Introduction

2004-05-21 by Sam Ecoff

I should probably introduce myself. I am fairly new here. I am a
composer and a teacher. I teach 70 students at a large private
conservatory in southeastern Wisconsin, USA. I mostly teach piano, but
I also teach theory and composition. I have developed a curriculum for
teaching children music technology, and I currently have 7 music
technology students.

I compose music for music libraries. My compositions have appeared on a
variety of shows, including 20/20, Nightly News with Tom Brokaw, The
Today Show, The Tonight Show, and The Teen Choice Awards among others.
If you are interested, you can hear one of my pieces on the Vienna
Symphonic website at www.vsl.co.at. Click on DEMOS and then USER DEMOS
and then my name (Sam Ecoff).

I keep a variety of synths, both old and new at my studio. My current
gear list includes (in no particular order):

ARP 2600 grayface with ladder filter and newer duophonic keyboard
ARP Sequencer
Paia 9700 modular
Miscellaneous Blacet and CGS Modules
Ensoniq Mirage Rack
Roland MC-202
Roland Juno 1 & 2
Roland JX-3P with Programmer
Roland JX-10 with Programmer
Roland JP-8000
Roland XV-5080
Roland D-110
Roland RS-09
Kawai K-1r
Kawai K-3
Kawai K-4r
Kawai K-5m
Korg Triton Rack
Korg Oasys
Korg MS-2000r
Access Virus C
Waldorf Microwave XT
Waldorf Pulse
Waldorf Micro Q
Emu Emulator e6400 ultra
Emu Proteus 1XR
Oberheim Matrix-1000
Casio VZ-10m
Casio CZ-101
Casio CZ-5000
Nord Lead 3
Nord Rack 2
Nord Micro Modular
Novation Basstation Rack
Yamaha FS1R
Yamaha TX-7
Yamaha TX-81z
Yamaha TX-816
Yamaha DX-9
Yamaha DX-21
Kurzweil Micropiano

Effects and Processing include:
Roland EF-303
Alesis Air FX and Air Synth
Electrix Warpfactory, Filterfactory, and MO-FX
Alesis midiverb 4

I use Digital Performer as my main sequencer, and I have recently
gotten into Logic Pro for softsynths. I use a Fatar SL-880 as my main
controller at my studio, and an Oxygen 8 with my laptop. In the future,
I think that I will probably not invest in too many more vintage
instruments, and I plan to spend most of my time adding software synths
and adding to my modular rig. Even with powerful soft modulars such as
Reaktor and Oasys, I find myself returning over and over to my hardware
modular rig as it offers a different way to be creative. Looking
forward to more discussion of older gear....

Hi All,

As Sam has now introduced himself to the group, I can highly
recommend
listening to a piece he has composed. It's called "Hope Springs" and
is one of the best compositions I've heard in a long time.

Even my wife likes it and she hates anything to do with synthesizers,
and any music I suggest, just in case it has a synth in it!

Sorry if this is a bit off topic.

Regards,

Clive.
