The Mark II 3 Violin sounds that Pinder achieved was due to the high end roll-off the solid state amp gave him. Pinder has spoken several times about changing the amp in his tron to achieve this sound. I don't believe it was totally Tony Clark's mastery that achieved this sound as you can hear it even in the raw YouTube live clips, like this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nITFMZ_M13E

Days of Future Past and In Search of the Lost Chord used the original MKII preamp. By late 1968 to early 1969 the new preamp was installed. If you listen to any live recordings prior to 1969, the sound is much harsher on the tron than anything live from 1969 onwards.

Hi all- I have wondered what Mike Pinder was trying to accomplish with his different equalization. Was it aimed at smoothing the harshness out, or reducing the inherent MK2 noise (something Jerry Korb was able to figure out), to punch through better when playing live, or just to make the instruments sound clearer to Mike's own ears? Has Mr. Pinder ever been asked about this? HIWATT was in no way related to Marshall. It was a much higher quality build and a very versatile series of amplifiers. It was built by Dave Reeves as was Sound City and I believe Orange amplifiers.

Dave Reeves was under conract to provide amplifiers for Sound City, but once the contract ended, he naturally decided to focus entirely on his own Hiwatt brand. So not all Sound City amps were built by Dave Reeves. Dave Reeves had nothing to do with Orange. Early Orange amps were built by one of the great unsung heroes of tube amplification, Matt Mathias and his company Matamp. Yes, I was a HIWATT dealer and service center and some of the earlier Sound City amps were almost identical. I still have several HIWATTS but the original company is long gone. I really like the Orange stuff as well and I do remember the Matamp although never played through one.....I did hear very good things about them. Dave Reeves has been dead since the early 80's. The Reeves amps look very much like the original HIWATT. I did some work for HIWATT when they were manufactured in Modesto, CA. A lot of people have made them over the years but the originals certainly set a high standard. Harry Joyce (the builder of the original HIWATT made HIWATT type amps for a while then died in early 2000. The HIWATT amplifier has been produced in many variations (I worked on the 20 & 30 watt versions (EL84X2 or EL34X4) but the originals can be beat. I played British and have a picture of me playing through two 50 watt heads on top of two stacked 4X12 cabs. The bass player played through (my) HIWATT 400. The other guitar player played through a 100 watt Marshall stack. My ears are still ringing........ Hi all- When the leaves turn colors and start to fall, it takes me back to a time I discovered the Moodies as a teen. It was a very memorable time. This happens every year. All their music then ends up on my car stereo, and I take long drives. I, too, marvel at the mystery of their sound. This group has answered many of the questions, and more will surely come. Something like that, Frank. But, for Colorado, the wording must be changed to include cottonwood trees, mountain sunsets, and canadian geese somehow. And, more life, less death. We had some FM deejays that played the hell out of the Moodies back then. Whole album sides. Weed breaks for them, I believe. LOVE the Orange amps. The one I really wanted, the Thunderverb 50w head w/2x12 cabinet was out of my price range, so I picked up a Blackstar HT20. Made in Korea, it is of significantly higher build quality than any Chinese built equivalent, and it is a ball of fire. Great gain channel, peel the paint off a house clean channel and you can pound the input for even more snarl.
I am slowly getting addicted to guitar pedals now...
