Re: [newmellotrongroup] New Video

I watched a few minutes... I'll come back to it. It was nice to get a
musical guided tour of the Dickson Mansion.

I love the music, but find the visuals a bit distracting.
Watched and listened several times eyes open and closed.
Top notch Mike, thank you!
Looked the room number up from The Shining, and that's a very numericaly oriented film.
I had no idea.

Great job Mike.....BTW yours is my favorite "all Mellotron all the time" album on my iPod! :)

Very tasty stuff. Mind if I forward it to some paranormal podcasts and radio shows, specifically Mysterious Universe and Darkness on the Edge of Town Radio Show?

In The Court of the Crimson King. That's what started the whole thing for me.

Well, not exactly. I saw them live in Nov of 1969 at the West Palm Beach Rock Festival and they played that album and much of In the Wake of Poseidon. It was essentially the same show as the Fillmore shows on the live CDs.

They played two performances at that festival, and would have played a third day had the promoters not cancelled that show because they were running out of time. Bastards! But I saw that band live twice, and I consider myself quite fortunate. Changed my musical life.

It's hard to pick one. for me it would be either Yes "Close to the Edge", King Crimson's "Lizard" or Anglagard's "Epilog" (feel a bit self-concious nominating that one what with there being a member of the band on the list, but really, it's a teriffic album, and the use of mellotrons on it is outstanding~)

It's hard to pick one. for me it would be either Yes "Close to the Edge", King Crimson's "Lizard" or Anglagard's "Epilog" (feel a bit self-concious nominating that one what with there being a member of the band on the list, but really, it's a teriffic album, and the use of mellotrons on it is outstanding~)

my favorite yes album is RELAYER

It's my favourite one as well. "Gates of Delirium" cranked up really loud is always a blast, I had it on in the car last week. No really an outstanding mellotron album to me, at least though

Shameless plug, but favorite piece of Tron music for me is Mike
Dickson's arrangement of "Adagio For Strings"

But after all four of them leave my house, I'm really frickin' sore and tired. A Godley experience with lots of Creme.

That's not a Mellotron!

"In this pre-sampler<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sampler_(musical_instrument)> period, the group was able to simulate a large polyphonic<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polyphonic> choir, creating a dramatic tonal effect similar to that produced by the well-known choir setting on the Mellotron<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mellotron>, but with a far richer sound, and in full stereo<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stereo>."

Yes there is another Tony on the list.
I do not know him or where he lives.
The one song I never liked by YES is roundabout, lol.
Check the member list on Yahoo, he should be on there, but I haven't seen a recent post.
I saw Relayer 8 times and became friends with Patrick.
He records in Orlando, or did.
Been trying to contact him as he is a car nut like I am.
That's where my Orchestron info and factory visits came from.
I played his triple, he wasn't fond of it, to put it mildly and neither was I.

Re: New Video

2011-01-26 by Nick Hewitt

In terms of "...Mellotron drenched albums..." it depends how drenched they are. In terms of EVERY track having 'tron on it, then it's "Pampered Menial" by Pavlov's Dog - a brilliant album with brilliant vocals (which I know turns the stomachs of at least 2 forum members!)
Ignoring "My Tron Top Ten" on Andy Thompson's site (which I'll have to change), honourable mentions I give to...
"Starless" (on "Red"), "The Fright Watch" segueing into "The Talking Drum" (on "The Night Watch" album) and "Bartley Butsford" segueing into "Exiles" (on CD3 of the "Great Deceiver" album) by King Crimson. In my view, King Crimson have made the greatest Mellotronic contribution in terms of quantity (over 50 of their albums have 'tron) and quality to this world of Rock that we inhabit.
You can also add...
Genesis - "Watcher of the Skies", with THAT intro,
Jethro Tull - "The Witches Promise",
Mike Dickson - "Stroke #2" (on "Six Consequences")
Edgar Froese - "Macula Transfer",
The Groundhogs - "Earth Shanty" (on the "Hogwash" album. Not much tron, but very effective), and...
Sparks - "Thank God it's not Christmas" (off "Kimono my house". Same as for Groundhogs)

Hi Andy,

I live in Miami-Dade County, in Kendall; about an hour's drive from you. Previously you mentioned that you lived in Aventura in North Miami.

You might want to check out Churchill's in "Little Haiti", not too far from you. The club is owned by some British chap who appreciates progressive music and jazz. Pip Pyle (RIP) played there.

Is your M400 in storage ? Sure would love to see it !

I like Anglagard and Anekdoten too !

I know, but I've seen 10cc of fluid, and it seems a lot. 10cc is
reputedly the average quantity of male ejaculate. I suspect that this is
another Urban Myth. However, if all 4 members of 10cc ejaculated into

I don't love any albums because they are mellotronic. I love albums because of the music therein whether it has 'tron or not. I don't seek out mellotronic albums although I did in the early 1970s and bought a lot of indifferent and weak music. A mellotron can be the perfect adjunct but it's level of involvement does not dictate the ensuing quality. The much revered Czar album remains musically impoverished despite being smothered in tape replayness! I am slowly despatching mellotronic progrock to the recycling bin.

Most of the time, restraint is better than overuse.

I particularly like

    * Lizard (for the coda to 'Prince Rupert' on the original, which I
      think is just a /staggering /moment)
    * Phaedra (for the end of the first part...those closing pedalled
notes from the string section just did it for me)
    * Red (just for 'Starless')

Why do a reunion at all? It will be 4 or 5 60+ year old guys trying to recreate the lost vistas of their youth. I mean....why?

Leave it all alone and move the fuck on.

Love it.

Concur. They had a musicality that seemed to transcend the need to make the music 'bigger' with a Tron and instead do other things with it instead.

You can also add...
Mike Dickson - "Stroke #2" (on "Six Consequences")

True strory: at least eight notes on that track were played by my (late) cat.

I absolutely concur, me old fruitbat. The notion of 'prog rock' makes me
run to the toilet, mostly. In most cases you may find that the
instrument was used to make a 'big statement' or fill in gaps a rock
band with higher aspirations couldn't pull off themselves. The problem
is that 99% of what they did was so ham-fisted it reeked of schoolboy
levels of musical enthusiasm mixed with absolutely no sense of taste or
restraint.

I hardly play 'Mellotronic Music' any more because (1) I have one and a
load of tapes and never really have to play something else to be able to
hear it, and (2) most of it is dreadful. If it's not /musically /bad
(ie, if it is 'educated') then usually it means it's moronic.

Czar. Wow. Maybe one of the worst albums ever.

Beautifully scary……more than somewhat creepy…..kind of like Beatles, Pink Floyd, and something creepy that would make perfect sense on LSD….
Great job Mike…..BTW yours is my favorite “all Mellotron all the time” album on my iPod! J

The Zombies - Odessey and Oracle (1967) Is a keeper!
A fair amount of Rod Argent Mellotron. Strange stereo balance at times...but I love it anyway.

A mellotron can be the perfect adjunct but it's level of involvement does not dictate the ensuing quality. The much revered Czar album remains musically impoverished despite being smothered in tape replayness! I am slowly despatching mellotronic progrock to the recycling bin.

Loved G&C's Consequences! The Original Soundtrack and How Dare You? were well done too. I always liked the comedy in the lyrics.

They lost my interest the day I heard The Things We Do For Love. )-:

For me, none!
Never wanted or owned one.
Haven't mentioned the "hicup" everytime the disc completed one revoloution and started another, but about like needed to lift before the 8 seconds of tape is about to end with Mellotrons.
Great idea except it didn't work.

Some quotes from the Orchestron group about Mellotrons...

“ Heavy and impossible to tour with “

“ Cant play fast on them...”

“ 8 second limit and the end of every tape is out of tune “

“ Coolest album ? Trans europé express or tales from topographic ocean ”

“ Mellotron – the poor mans Orchestron “

“ Takes forever to change tapes “

“ Relayer was yes best album – without a doubt “

Yeah I have too, as does a friend of mine across the border.
Not a replacement for a Mellotron, but they have a cool sound of their own. Some discs are a little better than others though.
