[motm] Tolex use question

[motm] Tolex use question

2001-01-02 by elhardt@aol.com

I now have to build a couple of cases for my MOTM modules. The question I
have is about Tolex. The last time I was in a synth store, I was looking at
the guitar amps trying to figure out how the Tolex was applied. I don't
think I could find any seam of where one end would come together with the
other end. Any idea of what's going on there?

And if anybody knows of a place that sells it for less than $15 a yard I
would appreciate knowing where. I have to make some cases for other
equipment too. Thanks.

I'm considering the same. Inspecting an old rhythm box I have, it looks like
the Tolex is stretched then stapled inside the case (where it can't be
seen). But is there an adhesive used on the plywood (or back of the Tolex)
as well?

For a case, I would think there would be only one major seam necessary (on
the bottom preferably). For the corners I would make diagonal cuts (to wrap
from the larger areas around and over the edges of the plywood, toward the
interior of the case) and then affix metal corners (as on flight cases),
thus hiding any seams there.

David.

RE: Tolex use question

I built an MOTM cabinet using tolex and I was amazed at how good it looks. It was my first experience with covering anything.

Tolex "works" really well. It has a nice degree of stretch to it that stays put when you glue it. It cuts predictably and has no grain or bias. It's worth the extra bux. I bought mine from a guy who recovers fender amps and he gave me many helpful hints. Try to find an expert for support.

Use 3M Spray 77 for an adhesive. Make sure the surface you glue to is sealed so it has something firm to grip - I just painted my wood before I sprayed adhesive. Practice on a small piece of wood with seams/corners/etc. Use metal corner protectors for a real nice look.
