help: Fostex R-8 multitrack broken

help: Fostex R-8 multitrack broken

2000-12-18 by jhaible@t-online.de

In the midst of a recording session, my Fostex R-8 has left me.

The right reel (which is filled during Play and FFWD) is not
driven by the motor anymore, and turning it manually makes
rattling noises.
When I hit the Play or FFWD button, a motor starts inside,
and there are more rattling noises, but the reel does not
move.

Does anybody have experience with this model ?
A service manual even ?
Dare I ask - is it online somewhere ?

For first aid, when I want to open it, do I remove the screws
on the front or on the rear to access the motors / mechanical
parts ?

Any helpful hints welcome !

Thanks in advance,

JH. - who faces Christmas holidays without a multitrack

nope,

but when stuff like this happens to tape machines, i'm usually forced to
take the back off and look for stuff that's come unhooked, ie springs /
drive belts... ...if it's not dead obvious, or the spring / belt comes off
again, then you're looking at finding a pro repair shop - your nearest *BIG*
studio should be able to point you in the right direction (if not then
they're complete cunts)

I have a Fostex R-8 too. If it is like other reel to reel recorders, then it
may be an internal belt that slipped off. I don't know if they can break
too. I don't know whether you remove the back screws and/or the side screws.
I seem to remember at one point removing the back screws to solve a
connector ground disconnection, but when removing the back of the case, there
were so many circuit boards flopping around that I didn't think I would get
it closed back up properly, so be careful and remove the case slowly.

Thanks - this will prevent me from trying the rear access !
Somebody else pointed out that I have to remove the front panel,
but this is still not easy - I have the number of the German distributor
meanwhile - I'll try to phone them tomorrow.

Thanks again for your mail,

JH.
